Countries We Write In: Queen Kanu

I’m Queen Nneoma Kanu from Eastern Nigeria, currently in Lafayette, Louisiana, USA where I’m pursuing a Ph.D. in Africana Studies. I write contemporary fiction with elements of SFF that reflect aspects of Igbo culture.

Writing aesthetics: my go-to writing place is on my bed! Once I have my headphones, a bottle of water and my laptop, I am good to go! I formed this habit as a child, snuggling up in bed while other girls played ten-ten. I read novels like Eddie Iroh’s Without A Silver Spoon, Buchi Emecheta’s The Joys of Motherhood and Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart to mention a few. I also daydreamed on my bed too!

Achilles Art Studio: this place is where other creatives in my Ph.D. program gather to listen to stories from emerging and established writers. Another of my favorite attractions in the gallery is at the back wall where this cute knitted octopus resides!

Jason’s Deli: Food! I am a writer who loves food. If I am out to write, I ALWAYS grab a meal of bread, chips and a side of salad as a treat before writing.

Reve Coffee Shop Lafayette: This coffee shop is located in Downtown Lafayette. The aroma of the coffee brewing is so exhilarating! I indulge myself with a cuppa whenever I am fortunate to go there. I love coffee and it started when I came to the US in 2019. So far, so good!

Asides from a decade of teaching experience in African literature at the college level, I’ve written short stories published for prizes and literary anthologies. My latest short story on democracy was funded for publication by the National Democratic Institute, Washington DC. I’m on the path to traditional publishing and believe I will get mystery stories to the world someday soon.
